What is Cortaflex?
Cortaflex was one of the first successful equine joint supplements in America, and has been widely used in the UK for more than 25 years! The Cortaflex range is now worldwide, and over 2 million units have been sold! The formula has changed with science over the years, but the fundamentals of what Cortaflex delivers has remained the same: essential trace minerals and building blocks of key compounds for joint health. The maintenance of healthy joint fluid is the main purpose of Cortaflex.
Horses experience wear and tear to their cartilage through either intense competition and exercise, or through ageing. When cartilage becomes damaged, it is pitted rather than smooth, and the joint fluid becomes thin rather than viscous. This reduces the shock absorbing properties of the joint, which causes pain and ultimately lameness.
The building blocks of Cortaflex help chondrocytes (joint cells) to maintain their repair processes.
These key compounds are:
- Collagen - this helps provide strength to cartilage, and is necessary for chondrocytes to repair.
- Hyaluronic Acid (HA) - this helps to form synovial (joint) fluid. which lubricates the joint and provides nutrients to cartilage.
- Amino Acids - specific amino acids such as glutamine combine with the body's glucose to form glucosamine, which provides flexibility to cartilage and helps to stay spongy rather than thin.
- Copper, Manganese and Silicon - these essential trace elements help horses to produce their own chondroitin, hyaluronic acid and collagen.
- Methylsulphonylmethane (MSM) - this provides a bio-available sulphur source, which supports the body's own anti-inflammatory processes to reduce ongoing cartilage damage for horses undertaking intense exercise or training.
Cortaflex is available in Regular Strength and Super Fenn, for horses in lighter work or horses in harder work respectively. Both Cortaflex HAs are available as a liquid or powder.
