Grumpy Geldings and Stroppy Stallions
No More Moods – Not just for Moody Mares!
Mares get a hard time for being moody but they aren’t the only ones that can be temperamental!
Lets talk about Rigs. A Rig is an entire male with no obvious testicles externally, making them look like a gelding. Cryptorchid is the medical term for a rig. The hidden testicle(s) can be retained in the abdomen or the inguinal canal (the passage the testicle usually takes from the abdomen to the normal position in the scrotum). The hidden testicles can produce testosterone, they may even be fertile and able to get mares pregnant, although the condition is thought to be hereditary so we would not recommend breeding from these horses.
Rig’s can behave like a stallion and their behaviour can be aggressive and unpredictable, making them dangerous to handle. If you have a Rig, it is recommended to speak to your Vet. Your Vet will be able to take a blood test to establish if they have remaining testicular tissue and advise you on the course of action. False Rigs are geldings that show stallion like behaviour despite being true geldings with no testicles. These horses can be tricky to manage as their behaviour can also be stallion – like and unpredictable.
No More Moods can provide nutritional support for this unwanted behaviour. No More Moods, key ingredients are: Chasetree berry extract, Magnesium and Vitamin B1.
Chasetree berry is also known as Monk’s pepper after its historical popularity with celibate clergymen for its to reduce unwanted sexual libido. Magnesium supports the horse to reduce muscle tension. Vitamin B1 (thiamine) helps maintaining correct nerve function. Both Magnesium and Vitamin B1 support focus and concentration.
